I took a minute to check out what was trending on the internet this past week. One thing that caught my attention was all the Super Bowl topics. The New England Patriots’ deflate- gate and the interview given by Marshawn Lynch of the Seattle Seahawks “I’m just here so I won’t get fined." (I’m being forced to talk to the media. If I had my way I would not be here).
Listening to “I’m just here so I won’t get fined” made me think about reasons young people attend church. Are you here because you have no choice and you are just waiting until you are old enough to make your own decision?
Are young people leaving the church?
A few years ago, LifeWay Research examined the issue, looking at some of the things that help young adults stay, and have a meaningful worship experiences. We wanted to know what it takes for a young person to continue his or her faith through high school, college, the career years and beyond. (As discussed in Essential Faith by Sam and Thom Rainer.)
Some young adults listed the following reason for leaving:
They simply wanted a break from church - They had moved to college - Their work made it impossible or difficult to attend - Church members seemed judgmental or hypocritical
They didn’t feel connected to the people at their church - Church members were unfriendly and unwelcoming
I hear these reasons. If the church is boring and I’m busy and the church is full of hypocrites and I don’t connect to them why would I want to go there? Of course, I don’t believe there is any excuse for missing worship of the God who created us and wants to save us in Jesus Christ.
Psalm 122:1 I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go to the house of the Lord.
David said that he was glad. The house of the Lord had something to offer him.
Hebrews 10:24-25 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Let us encourage one another to come out and learn what the Lord has to offer.
1. What is it that the church has to offer you young people?
2. What would you like to see offered more at DCBC?
I would love to hear your thoughts young people…
